how do you compost?

I don’t do it very well. I have two Smith & Hawken Biostack units that didn’t cost me anything.
composters

I like the theory behind them, and I have plenty of room to move them around. But they just don’t work for me. I finally realize that. I often have more to compost than I have room for and don’t have a good system for getting things ‘put together’ right…meaning mixing browns and greens etc. So I keep adding and adding, when I’m motivated, but never ‘finishing’ batches. I want something that works better.

My local gardening accomplice just got one of these…
compost tumbler…but I don’t think I’m ready to spend that money. Plus, I do like the exercise that turning compost affords. But doing it in those little plastic squares, particularly because I’m short, tends hurt more than help.

So I want something like this…wood and wire compost bin…or this…block compost bin

I have the room and I don’t mind ‘utilitarian’ looking things in the garden area. The block one seems to be the easiest and I would think the cheapest. Also, if its done by just securing the blocks with rebar, it could easily be disassembled or moved. And it’s not a bad thing to have a few cinderblocks laying around.

I’d really like a wood one. But it seems so…extravagant…for a compost bin. Sunset magazine even had plans for one with an arbor/trellis above it.

This is my first post that I really, really would like some help with. It may be one for me to really venture out and see what others have said. And try to solicit some help.

So if you’re reading this, and have an opinion or any expertise…please help!
